/ THE MUNICH VIGIL
FR / EN
From the 12th of December 2020 to the 12th of December 2021
With Gasteig Theater, Munich, Germany
Currently in performance, The Munich Vigil – Türmer München, created by choreographer Joanne Leighton, takes place on the roof of the Gasteig Theater, twice a day, every day, for 365 consecutive days. Like the « Türmer » – signifying in German the watchmen of the Middle Ages – the 730 participants will keep watch over the city for one hour at a time, high above the spectacular Philharmonic Hall.
How does it work? After inscribing on the website and partaking in a short preparatory workshop, come to the Shelter on the roof of the Philharmonic Hall, look over the city for an hour at sunrise or sunset and be part of the year-long performance. After your Vigil, you leave your Traces – your memory of your Vigil – in the form of a photograph of yourself and an entry about your impressions, thoughts and feelings in our journal, the Blog, the online platform and gallery.
An Opening Ceremony is held to celebrate the beginning of the project and a Closing Ceremony with all participants at the end of the project, as well as Sharing Events every three months, providing an opportunity to share your experiences and meet the artist and creator of this performance, Joanne Leighton.

« Oh - what an experience. I'm not back on the ground yet! The day could not have been more beautiful. Not a single little cloud in the sky and I in bright anticipation. I've always loved looking down from above. Take a picture from the other perspective. The sun is four fingers above the horizon and shines so brightly. You can see everything Munich has to offer that is not to the east. Including the Zugspitze - an extra gift! This is how the city lies, completely flat in its gravel plain. Interestingly, as time passes and the sun sinks, it takes on more and more contour, becomes more vivid. In my perception, moving hills with churches on them and valleys between the houses emerge. Last but not least, the Isar valley. In the last quarter of an hour it becomes magical. The light changes by the minute and creates alpenglow on the mirrored skyscraper facades and cranes. This time touches my innermost being the most and passes the fastest - until our sun disappears with its warmth and vitality. But it is not gone, as we all know. The next Türmer will greet it tomorrow. I feel pleasantly connected with all the Munich Türmer, am happy to be able to take part in this great project and thank you, Joanne, very much. »
